Shutter Types & Prices Explained
What types of Shutters are available and why do Shutters vary so much in price?
Not all Shutters are the same and it's worthwhile taking a good look at the finish of the Shutters when comparing quotes.
Without knowing the difference, it is like comparing a Mercedes to a KIA
PVC Shutters are a little heavier than Timber Plantation Shutters, which means they are a more restricted in both the width and drop of the Shutter Panels.
With the narrower limitations on the width of each panel, it may mean you require more panels and in some cases, it just does not suit the look you are after. The same applies to the drop, a midrail is required at a smaller drop than the timber Shutters.
Shutters from MYT Shutters are painted in water based paint and not polyurethane paint. Water based paints are much better for hay fever and allegories than the chemicals in the polyurethane paint. This we know after many years living with hay fever being around polyurethane shutters and then after switching to water based paint, the hay fever went away overnight. These are things that need to be considered when comparing quotes.
While anyone can just put shutters on your windows, A Shade Better Window Furnishings takes the time to work out which type of Shutter will suit you best and then give you options.
PVC Shutters
There are three types of PVC Shutters: (Each type is ideal for bathrooms and wet areas)
Type 1:
The first and often the cheapest way to make a Shutter is non-painted PVC Shutter.
Cheaper to make as they are not painted and have and often with the extrusion lines still showing them, which look OK from outside, but not the soft nice look that other finishes provide. They just look plastic.
A Shade Better Window Furnishings prefer to not use these types of Shutters.
Type 2:
Pre-Painted Shutters are when the components are painted in long lengths, then cut and assembled. They look great, but not as good if you look at them closer. The joints are not quite as soft looking as the next finish. The ends of the louvres are not painted and also visible. From our experience, PVC goes yellow over the years and this gets more noticeable.
Pre Painted Shutters generally have less options, such as limited framing options and no hidden tilt available.
Almost all Australian made indoor Shutters are Pre-Painted or unpainted PVC.
There is also generally a smaller range of colours to select from with this type of Pre-Painted Shutter.
Pre-Painted Shutters will certainly give your home the same look, but just not looking as good as they can be.
Type 3:
This type of Shutter is manufactured and then painted. This gives the panels a great soft look with no lines around the frame joints and the ends of the louvres are painted also. There are more options including Hidden Tilt, which means there is no visible tilt bar, from either inside or out. This is ideal for the front of your home, to give it a cleaner look. This type of PVC shutter finish would by far be our most popular option, but it all depends on budgets and preferences.
30 year structural warranty, 5 years paint and 3 years hardware.
These two pictures are the same window showing how we take the time to configure your shutters to suit your needs perfectly. The Split Tilt option can be great for privacy and still allowing light to flow through.
This option is at no extra cost and available with all shutter types.

Shutter L Frame
L Frame gets it's name by the shape of the frame. It is a simple design and the best option to have your shutters set into the window frame. Many window types have obstructions such as window locks in the way and does not suit L frame.
A larger style of L Frame is also available for when there is no recess at all and needs to be installed onto the wall.
One of the pictures below show Insert L Frame for when there is no recess.
Recess mounting L Frame requires gap filler to seal the frame. it is shown here half done to show the frame clearer.
Shutter Z Frame
Z Frame also gets it's name from the shape. This frame is mostly used on cement rendered window frames that are quite out of square.
The frame comes back around the recess to form an architrave and hide any gaps between the shutters and window recess.
This frame also brings the shutter forward a little away from the glass can give more room to clear window locks and obstacles.
There are several different Z shaped frames for plantation Shutters and some examples are below.
